71-Year-Old Louisiana Man Arrested On 100 Counts Of Rape

Authorities in Louisiana arrested a 71-year-old man who has been accused of committing at least 100 rapes over the last five decades. The Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office began investigating Harvey Joseph Fountain after they received a tip that he may have sexually assaulted minors.

As police began to investigate Fountain, they were shocked to discover that he may have been responsible for at least 50 rapes in the area, some of which date back to the 1970s.

He was taken into custody last week on 50 counts of rape, but once he was in jail officials learned of even more victims and the charges were amended to add an additional 50 counts of first-degree rape. He was initially held on a bail of $500,000, but that was upped to one million dollars after the new charges were filed.

Fountain could face the death penalty if he is convicted on charges of first-degree rape. Authorities have referred the case to a grand jury and say they are continuing to investigate. They indicated that more arrests could be made as their investigation continues.
