Free street parking in Sacramento may soon be a thing of the past. The Sacramento City Council will consider repealing free parking measures the city put in place when the COVID-19 pandemic began during Tuesday's City Council meeting. The city stopped issuing on-street parking tickets last spring unless it triggered a safety issue. Since then, Sacramento has also been providing free parking at meters after 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends. The council also cut the $15 fee if parking tickets go unpaid for over 35 days. If the council votes to repeal those measures tonight, the pre-pandemic parking policies would go back into effect January 3rd, 2022. The city uses the money collected by parking measures to pay for the bond debt used to build The Golden 1 Center, according to the Sacramento Bee. If the council votes to repeal the measures, the only free parking would be on Sundays and would not apply to the Old Sacramento Waterfront district.
