A Florida man was busted for allegedly stealing nearly $1,000 worth of items from a Walmart by scanning a Kool-Aid packet at the self-checkout lane. Authorities said that Bradley Young, 37, hid the .24 cent package in his hand and continued to scan it while putting more expensive items in his bag.
A loss prevention worker at the store recognized Young and discretely followed him around the store and watched as he used the self-checkout lane. Despite having a cart full of expensive items, Young's bill came to just $24.44.
When police confronted Young, he had $994.13 worth of unpaid items, including a $248 scooter, a $120 dual-navigation system, and $160 worth of batteries. He was taken into custody and was charged with grand theft and shoplifting.
The loss prevention officer told police that Young also grabbed a bottle of soda and a fan off the shelf and returned them for $9.48, showing workers a receipt on his phone. Young was previously arrested in January for retail theft under $100. He spent less in a month in custody and was released in February for time served.
The Collier County Sheriff's Office said that Young is a convicted felon in Ohio.
