Fordham University Student Dies After Falling from Campus Clock Tower

A Fordham University student was pronounced dead after falling from a campus clock tower on Sunday, school officials said.

Sydney Monfries, 22 and a senior at Fordham University, was just "weeks away from graduating" when she climbed the tower at Keating Hall at around 3 a.m. Sunday. Monfries and some of her fellow students were climbing up a set of stairs when she fell through a hole in a landing, the New York Police Department said. She was found with injuries to her head and neck, NBC New York reported.

She later died at a local hospital.

"Our hearts go out to Sydney’s parents, and her family and friends—theirs is an unimaginable loss, and we share their grief," Fordham University president Joseph M. McShane said in a note to students."There are no words sufficient to describe the loss of someone so young and full of promise."

Fordham would issue Monfries her bachelor's degree posthumously, McShane added.

Grief counseling is being made available to students, the University said.
